On the eve of the 2000 presidential election, Vic was as anxious as most everyone else. He had never stayed up so late to watch the returns. He found himself pacing around the room, eating one pretzel after another, not because he liked them, but simply because he was nervous.

He had always thought of waiting as sitting at the JiffiLube, reading one of those magazines he would never otherwise subscribe to: Auto World Illustrated. That kind of waiting was terminable.

But this kind of waiting was a different fit of clothes altogether.
